Changes to Medicare requirements for Sports Physicians, making treating Aussies injured playing sport more exensive and time consuming from this week!
From this week people with injuries sustained through playing sport will need a GP referral to visit a Sports Physician! This was introduced with NO consultation from Physios who work closely with sports Dr’s.
Before this week 30% of people with sports injuries got referred directly from their Physio, APA estimate the additional costs of a GP Consultation will tally approx $2 million per year + the extra pressure on overstretched GP service! The waiting times for those waiting for a referral could be as much as a month in Rural areas.
The decision to make sports physicians available only on referral from their GP goes against everything the Gillard government has been promising…
