Preparing for the mass retirement of the Baby Boomers

The retirement of the baby boomers will significantly impact the nature of aged care services in the future.

The access to a skilled workforce will dramatically decrease, as approximately one third of Australia’s nurses are aged over 50 and will reach retiring age within the next five years.

Considering this wave of demand for skilled nurses that will strike Australia, the health sector will need to come up with innovative ideas in order to maintain the quality and supply of care.

The retiring Baby Boomer generation, however, will also bring about new opportunities for a robust volunteer-base.

The biggest areas for demand will be found along the coast of Australia. Lifestyle choices and early retirement will affect i.e. Gold Coast and South East Queensland.

The group of aged care clients will see a bigger shift towards a Mediterranean heritage as well as Asian populations, mainly from India and China.

These new changes in demographics leads to new behaviour in the aged care group and give births to other needs such as more focus on wellness and wellbeing, as well as spirituality.
